How to determine the load center of the forklift truck?

  • 2024-01-03
The process of finding the forklift load center is simple. Please check the information on the forklift nameplate. It will tell you: 1. Distance from the load center 2. Vertical mast 3. Tilt to the right 4. Altitude
When you stack loads evenly, such as pallets, the load center will be in the middle of the load. So, for a 1000 mm load, the load center will be 500 mm. Based on the information on the nameplate, you should also keep in mind the maximum height and length of the load. In addition, a load that exceeds the specified load center distance can only be lifted if the load is well below the limit weight.

In addition, in the process of operating the forklift, we also need to pay attention to the following four points to better ensure the stability of the body and avoid accidents:

1. Stabilize the triangle
Keeping the forklift's center of gravity inside the stable triangle during training is one of the hard things for operators to learn.
The forklift uses a three-point suspension system. These three points are located halfway between the two loaded wheels and the rear wheel. When these points are connected by imaginary lines, a stable triangle is formed. Therefore, in order to avoid tipping over, the operator must ensure that the combination of the center of gravity of the forklift and the load is always located within the stability triangle.

According to current data, rollover is a common form of forklift accidents, accounting for 24% of the total accidents. The center of gravity may move out of the triangle due to factors such as unbalance or heavy load. In addition, carrying a large load and driving on uneven or sloping terrain can lead to other causes of accidents.

2. Center of gravity for loading
It is crucial to pay attention to the center of gravity at which you are going to lift the goods. It is also important to consider their combined centres of gravity.
When the load is not centered, such as an engine or other asymmetrical item, you must estimate the center of gravity carefully. On the other hand, a load center with a large load may be much farther away than a normal 24-inch load center.

So, given the specific load height and load center, the nameplate on your lift truck will tell you what the lifting capacity is. If your load center exceeds the load center of the forklift's ultimate lifting capacity, your lifting capacity will be greatly reduced.

3. Center of gravity of the forklift

The lift truck also has a center of gravity that moves when the load is lifted. When the load is lifted, the center of gravity moves forward. To ensure that the centre of gravity of the forklift is always within the stability triangle, care must be taken not to lift the load centre beyond the allowable limit value.

4. Operate in a safe environment
Keeping the weight low is a good habit to keep the load safe and stable. In addition, careful driving when stopping, turning and starting is an effective way to maintain stability. And don't forget to wear your seat belt!
Use extreme caution on slopes, ramps, or other uneven terrain. Do not lift or turn heavy objects on uneven surfaces. In this case, your center of gravity will quickly migrate outside the stable triangle.
As a rule, when driving on a slope with no load, your fork should always be pointing downhill. When handling the goods, the fork should always be pointed at the top of the ramp to avoid the goods falling.

When operating the forklift, if it begins to tip over, do not attempt to jump out of the vehicle. According to research, it is better practice to stay inside the vehicle and fall in the direction.
